Typically, travel agents recommend options for accommodation, transportation, recreation, tours, and car rentals. Agents may also assist international travelers with information on legal paperwork (such as visas and passports), exchange rates, and customs regulations. Travel agents and tourism professionals access travel information from computer-based sources or personal visits to restaurants, hotels, resorts, etc. In this way they can offer suggestions based on both personal and expert travel experience. Even if a college program does not specialize directly in travel, a variety of education course are available that can provide a strong background in useful fields, including foreign languages, geography, and communications. For those interested in the business and management aspect of travel, experience in accounting and management courses is highly recommended. The American Society of Travel Agents has training courses that offer basic information relating to the travel and tourism industry. Most travel agencies in some cases may train employees in general computer instruction to operate the streamlined reservation and airline system. The Institute of Certified Travel Agents also offers professional travel agents courses that help them become a Certified Travel Counselor (CTC). The ICTA also provides programs that specialize in regional-global information and development marketing. Personal experience with travel is always helpful to agents in making recommendations and sales to clients, as is patience and the ability to communicate with confidence. Other useful traits include sales, computer, and writing skills. Employees generally become receptionists or reservation clerks before moving on to becoming a travel agent. This advancement follows formal training and need not be limited to regular travel agent duties. An agent may eventually assume managerial roles over different offices. Official corporations such as airlines must approve of the agent in an established agency before he/she can begin receiving commission from sales. The International Airlines Travel Agency Network and the Airlines Reporting Corporation are two examples of bodies that check the financial solidity and experience of agents within an agency. Although no Federal licensing procedures exist, several states require travel services and sellers to become certified. Certification and registration information can be found through the Department of Commerce for each State or the through the Office of the Attorney General.
