Job Highlights for Psychologists

  • The number of self-employed psychologists exceeds the average of self-employed professionals by about four percent.
  • Psychologists who wish to specialize in areas such as counseling need a doctoral degree whereas academic and school-oriented psychology requires a master’s degree.
  • Anyone interested in psychology as a career needs a bachelor’s degree
Clinical psychologists make up the largest proportion of psychologists and work primarily in hospitals, clinics, and counseling centers. They help patients with mental illness or injuries to rehabilitate and adjust to life. Often clinical psychologists will help patients with neurological conditions, spinal cord injuries, chronic illness, strokes, and arthritis. Also, they help people coping with personal crises, such as the death of a close family member.

Clinical psychologists perform a variety of tests, interviews, and evaluations with patients who have different needs. Behavior modification and group psychotherapy programs are two specific examples. These psychologists usually work in collaboration with specialists in developing treatment programs that are compatible with a patient’s level of understanding. Others work in institutions such as medical schools or colleges. They teach students good practice in behavior medicine and health. Still others are involved in community serviced health programs.

Clinical psychologists can specialize in different areas of practice, including geropsychology, neuropsychology, and general health psychology which assists individuals with maintaining good health habits. Geropsychology works with elderly individuals, and neuropsychology work with associations of behavior and brain functions. These specialties reflect the growing need intervention of psychologists in specific areas.

Psychologists will generally collaborate with other medics to find the best methods of medical treatments. However, only medical doctors and psychiatrists are permitted to prescribe medication to medication. The one exception is in New Mexico where the law allows specially trained clinical psychologists to prescribe medicine. Other States are trying to follow suit by proposing similar laws.

Counseling psychologists use many methods to help people cope with everyday life. They work in hospitals, university counseling programs, or else they run an independent practice.

School psychologists work within school districts to help students with behavior and/or learning problems. They work with school personnel, teachers, and parents to improve learning and teaching strategies and conflict resolutions. These psychologists evaluate school services and the effectiveness of behavior management programs.

Industrial-organizational psychologists use research and medical principles to improve the overall quality and productivity of occupations. They use analysis and counseling procedures to evaluate management and productivity procedures in the work place. These psychologists are often hired as consultants to work with management teams to solver problems or make changes.

Developmental psychologists evaluate development that takes place in individuals and society over time. They can specialize in behavioral changes at different stages of human life or from disability. One goal is to help elderly individuals remain self-sufficient and independent for longer.

Social psychologists study social interaction and often work in applied fields such as marketing, systems design, or consultation. Social psychologists often specialize in specific fields such as leadership, group behavior, and attitude.

Experimental or research psychologists study human and animal behavior patterns and work for many different academic institutions, businesses, or government programs. They tend to work specialize in fields of learning and memory, thought, motivation, perception, neurological causes of behavior, and others.
