Paralegals assist lawyers in preparing for court procedures. This entails organizing the facts and information relating to the case and identifying important legal articles, laws, judicial decisions, and other related material. Attorneys use the written reports, legal documents, motions, etc. prepared by paralegals in filing lawsuits and handling court proceedings. Paralegals record and organize all documents that are relevant to the attorney’s field and assist them in accessing this information when needed. Paralegals also do numerous other tasks including drafting mortgages, trust instruments, separation agreements, and tax returns. Paralegals may also maintain financial records and direct the communication between other law offices. Most corporate legal departments, government offices, and law firms employ paralegals to work in areas of litigation, criminal law, personal injury, immigration and all other branches of legal work. Paralegals may even be able to work in a particular area within a legal firm’s specialty area. Paralegals carry widely diverse responsibilities that depend on the type of firm and organization they work in. Corporations might have paralegals draft shareholder agreements and other employee contracts. In general, paralegals will prepare and maintain financial records, minutes of meetings, and prepare other financial documents. They also check to ensure that the corporation is acting legally within government regulation. Paralegals responsibilities also vary within the public sector. Typically, they analyze legal information, record and maintain files, collect hearings evidence, and research useful material for lawyers. They also usually draft material on regulations and policy that can be used by the public. In addition to these common duties, paralegals may, when approved by law, represent clients at hearings. Smaller law firms usually require a paralegal to have a broad knowledge of the law to be able to research information in different legal branches. A larger law firm will usually have a paralegal specialize in one area of the law. Paralegal work has become increasingly dependent on computer software and internet-research. CD-ROMs and computer databases containing legal literature allow paralegals to access and organize material with ease. Billing programs and imaging software help paralegals scan documents and track client hours. Computer software has also made it considerably easier to analyze client tax records and strategies.
