Graphic Artists communicate their ideas and feelings through the use of art A wide assortment of mediums exist to assist achieve this, including painting, illustration, and sculpting. Artists use an array of artistic instruments in creating art. Too name just a few, these include oils, watercolors, pastels, pencils, plaster, and acrylic. Artists use different styles, whether it be realistic or abstract in their depiction of the world around them.

Artists are typically categorized threefold between art directors, fine artists, and multi-media artists. Art directors work in visual communications media to develop and present certain concepts. Fine artists formulate original are through the use of traditional methods of paint, sculpture, and illustration. Multi-media artists and animators work to create visual images in mediums of film, video and other electronic media.

Art directors work with ideas and concepts that will appear in printed or digital media. They are primarily concerned with the visual presentation of art and how it is formatted to grab the attention of a viewer. They choose which photographs and artwork will be used and how it will be formatted onto printed material. They also direct the work of those involved with the actual copy writing and layout of the artwork.

Fine Artists have their work presented in galleries, museums, collections, and homes. Most of their art is sold to private buyers and galleries, although at times they may be contracted to create something for a client. The gallery and the artist together decide on how to divide the profit received from the sale of the work. However, only a very few successful artists can achieve financial independence through the sale of their art and most have another job (many times as an art director or museum curator) to support themselves and their skill. Others also write for newspapers and magazines, or as institutional liaisons.

Fine Artists usually work with no more than two art forms. Illustrating, sculpting, printmaking, and painting are a few examples. Sketch artists, painters, and illustrators specialize in two-dimensional scene creation with their realistic use of perspective, color, and shading.

Illustrators make pictures for a variety of uses in books, stationary, greeting cards, textiles, calendars and other printed products. More and more illustrators are using digital programs that can be used on their home computer.

Medical and scientific illustrators use their artistic drawing skills for use of medical and biological sciences. This includes illustrations of anatomical and surgical procedures, as well as animals and plants. Medical, scientific, and legal professionals use these illustrations in teaching presentations and court hearings.

Cartoonists combine their artistic skills with a comical or critical approach to concepts. They often work with other people in the development process, drawing sports, advertising, political, and other socially oriented graphics.

Sketch artists use pastels, charcoal, and pencil to identify like and characteristic features of subjects. Legal agencies and most media outlets use sketches to identify suspects and courtroom events, for example.

Sculptors mold clay, glass, metal, and fabric, cut plaster, and use other materials to create three-dimensional images. Sometimes they will mix random light, motion, and sound objects to create an abstract object.

Printmakers create designs out of cut images in natural and unnatural material, such as wood, stone, or metal. The most common method is performed by placing ink onto the etched surface and then rolling the object using a printing press onto a piece of fabric or paper. Some printmakers use their hands in this process, or else they will use a computer to graphically process it. They are then printed from the computer.

Painting restorers work to preserve old and corrupted paintings. They use special chemicals and products to restore and preserve the damaged portions of paintings. This process requires high-skill training and experience; thus, experts usually perform it.

Multi-media artists and design animators work with mass media industries in film, TV and advertising through computer design processing. Starting with rough drawings, they transmit these drawings onto the computer to form media images used in TV and motion pictures. They also develop storyboards—a series of comic book like scenes to—in working with advertising agencies to promote commercials. They also act as an outline for media directors during a TV production.
